I Promised I Wouldn’t

You said you didn’t want to see me cry,
I promised I wouldn’t,
But you wanted to break up over the phone
And not in person
So you don’t see the reaction on my face
And so I don’t see yours

You said you didn’t want to see me cry,
I promised I wouldn’t,
But you treated my talk like it was just another lecture,
Like I was your parents trying to teach you a lesson.
I wanted you to learn, to end the pain,
For every guy you date, and for you.

You said you didn’t want me to cry,
I promised I wouldn’t,
But you taught me so much,
Like the teacher everyone wanted.
And then you left me on test day,
Like a best friend moving, like Neechan.

You said you didn’t want me to cry,
I promised I wouldn’t,
But you treated me like family, as did your mother.
And now you treat me like a stranger,
Meeting for the first time.
You even refused my gentle touch.

You said you didn’t want me to cry,
I promised I wouldn’t,
But I shaved for you,
I let you shape me into a likable image
And though my hair and pride will grow back
It will take time, time I may not have.

You said you didn’t want me to cry,
I promised I wouldn’t,
But after all you’ve done
And all the memories I have of us together,
How can I go on with a dry eye?
How can I continue without going against your wishes?

You said you didn’t want me to cry,
But I am.

*note*
This poem is about one of my ex-girlfriends
Neechan was a very good friend of hers that she considered like a brother (neechan means brother in Japanese)
He moved away and it really upset her.
